The Belleville community is mourning the tragic loss of Shenandoah Burton, 18, who was killed in a late-night shooting Saturday, January 17, 2026.
According to authorities, Belleville and Swansea police responded around 11:19 p.m. to reports of multiple shots fired in the 1700 block of Jamestown Road. Upon arrival, officers located three female victims at the scene. Shenandoah Burton was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other victims were found inside a nearby vehicle, one of whom suffered a gunshot wound and was transported for medical treatment. Their conditions have not been released.
Due to the location of the shooting and the involvement of multiple jurisdictions, the Belleville Police Department assumed control of the investigation. Investigators identified a known acquaintance as the suspect, and a regional BOLO (Be On the Lookout) alert was issued.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, January 18, at approximately 2:30 a.m., the suspect’s vehicle was located by the Perry County Sheriff’s Department in Missouri. Authorities said the suspect died from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers were able to make contact.
Police confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought at this time, and the investigation has concluded.
Shenandoah’s death has left family, friends, and the Belleville community heartbroken. Authorities extended their condolences to all those affected by the tragedy, as loved ones remember a young life lost far too soon.
